Will you Think About This For a Second

The size and age of the universe are almost beyond normal human comprehension. Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity is our very tiny planetary home. In a remote corner of a remote galaxy, we find refuge on this hunk of rock we call "Earth".

On this our little "dot" in space is everyone you know, everyone you love, everyone you've ever heard of, everyone who has ever lived. Thousands of confident religions, ideologies, economic and political doctrines; every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every billionaire and pauper, every sinner and saint; every couple in love, every father and mother, every superstar, every "supreme leader" in the history of humanity, all played out their lives on this very earth beneath your feet today.

The Earth is a very small stage in this cosmic arena. Think of all the rivers of blood spilled over the millennia by all those Generals and Emperors, so that they could be momentary masters of a small fraction of this our "dot" in space. Think of all the endless cruelties visited by inhabitants of one corner of the Earth on inhabitants of another corner of this same small Earth, all in the illusion of "war".

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe is challenged by the very night sky with all it's seemingly endless stars. It is challenged by the daily progress in our scientific ventures, and discoveries. In the cosmic perspective of all things, most of our human concerns and desires seem insignificant, and maybe even petty.

But nevertheless, on this same mote of rock in the cosmic vastness, exists beings such as yourself; beings with magnificently sophisticated minds, able to think, ponder and comprehend the universe as it is. Minds able to come to this beautiful realization. How humbling, yet glorifying to be human, and to call the Earth "Home"!
